[ARCHIVED] Increased Wild Fire Risk

This year has proven to be particularly challenging for wildfires in Utah, marked by a stark increase in both the number of incidents and acres burned compared to 2023. Recent wetter years have fostered abundant growth in grasses and shrubs, heightening the risk of fire during dry conditions. Despite some improvement in Utah’s drought conditions, prolonged periods of high temperatures have significantly dried out vegetation, further increasing the fire risk statewide. The majority of the wildfires in Utah are caused by humans.

To mitigate these risks and safeguard lives and property, it is crucial for everyone to work together and adhere to fire prevention recommendations while enjoying the outdoors. Following guidelines such as campfire safety to include prohibited campfire areas, disposing of cigarettes properly, respecting fireworks exclusion areas and safe discharge practices, ensuring clear areas around outdoor cooking equipment, and reporting suspicious activities, can play a pivotal role in reducing the likelihood of wildfires. Never burn yard waste, weeds, or other waste materials. Don’t park vehicles on top of dry vegetation or operate heat generating equipment near dry grass or brush. Ensure all trailer chains are properly secured and that brakes are in good working order and properly adjusted.

Remember that outside fires can spread quickly, especially when it is dry and hot. Take some time to evaluate all potential fire risks in your area and do what’s necessary to mitigate any potential problems. Keep water and a fire extinguisher close by, and report all fires immediately. Together, we can protect our communities and natural landscapes from the devastating impact of fires.
