[ARCHIVED] Mayor's Corner: I Love America

Each July, our nation gathers to celebrate the birth of the United States of America—an annual tradition that stirs something deep within me. As your mayor, a mother, a neighbor, and a proud American, I feel immense gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy and the sacrifices that have made those freedoms possible. The Fourth of July isn’t just a date on the calendar; it’s a celebration of who we are, where we came from, and what we stand for.

Here in South Jordan, patriotism is more than a passing sentiment. It’s a way of life. I see it in our community every day—in the American flags flown in front yards and business centers all over the city, the kindness we extend to one another, and the way we show up for our veterans, gold star families, and first responders. We are a city that honors our past while working together toward a brighter, stronger future. I believe that’s the truest expression of American spirit.

Independence Day reminds us of the courage and conviction of those who came before us—the visionaries who dared to imagine a free nation built on liberty, justice, and opportunity. Their determination laid the foundation for everything we have today. And it wasn’t easy. So while we celebrate with barbecues, parades, and family gatherings, I hope we also take a moment to reflect on their legacy and renew our own personal commitment to protecting it.

As we prepare for America’s 250th birthday next year, I encourage everyone to think about what freedom means in your own life. Whether it’s the ability to worship, speak your mind, raise your family, or pursue your dreams, those rights are precious. Let’s never take them for granted. Let’s teach our children not only to love their country but to serve it, protect it, and lead it forward with integrity.

One of my favorite things about being mayor is watching our community come together. From our annual SoJo Summerfest to neighborhood barbecues and fireworks in the park, these moments connect us—not just as residents of South Jordan, but as Americans united by shared values. I love this country with all my heart, and I love the way South Jordan embodies the very best of it.

Happy Independence Day, South Jordan! May your celebrations be joyful, your hearts be full, and your love for America be reflected in this month, and always.
