SOUTH JORDAN, UT – October, 3, 2022 — U.S. Senator Mitt Romney visited the facility for South Jordan’s water purification project, which is the first of its kind in Utah.

“This is the kind of solution that could be adopted around the State to get people drinking water,” said Sen. Romney.

The project, called Pure SoJo, recycles water to meet drinking water standards. Currently, South Jordan imports 100% of its water, having no local water source of our own due to an aquifer contamination issue.

“The recent U.S. Census named South Jordan one of the 10 fastest growing cities in America. As we look down the road at continued population growth, coupled with our historic drought, we are looking at ways to implement conservation that will ensure adequate drinking water for our residents for generations to come,” said South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey. “Our Pure SoJo pilot project provides an innovative cost effective, energy efficient method of producing another potential water source.”

The Pure SoJo water purification demonstration project will run for five years and will include tours with lawmakers, community members, and schools. The tours will focus on the important role that water recycling can play to meet the state’s water supply needs, how technology is used to purify recycled water, and how the economics of water recycling make sense to consider this source for future water supply.

“We expect our electricity, we expect our roads, and we expect our water to be there and water is getting to be a bigger and bigger issue,” said Sen. Romney.

The City has been working closely with the State of Utah Division of Drinking Water and its director, Tim Davis, as well as the Division of Water Quality, and the University of Utah on this project.

“We appreciate the cooperation of our partners at the University of Utah, Division of Drinking Water, and Division of Water Quality,” said Mayor Ramsey. “The City of South Jordan is firmly committed to working with all state and federal partners to ensure safe, reliable, and sustainable drinking water for our residents while also supporting critical water bodies across the state, including the Great Salt Lake. Together we can create a strong future for water across Utah.”
