  1. Mabel Nelson was "Aunt Mame" to all. You never left the Holt Homestead without her giving you hugs, kisses, candy, soda pop, and bags of popcorn.
  2. South Jordan has a long history with America's favorite pastime. The "Red Gales" was the name of South Jordan's Baseball Team in 1883. South Jordan is now home to Minor League Baseball's Triple-A team— The Bees — as of 2025.
  3. The South Jordan Fire Department, established in 1977, started as a volunteer fire department. It originally operated out of an old gas station located at approximately 1450 West South Jordan Parkway. Today, the Fire Department has four fire stations located throughout the city.
  4. Gary L. Whatcott was the South Jordan Fire Chief from 1993 to 2003 and created the City's first full-time Fire Department. Chief Whatcott eventually served as the City Manager from 2014 until his retirement in 2023. Afterward, the City Council named the South Jordan Public Safety Building after him.
  5. The White Fawn Flour Mill was one of the first commercial buildings established in South Jordan. Using water power and later electricity, the mill ground and sacked local farmers' wheat, and delivered it by wagon to local bakeries, boardinghouses, and stores.
  6. Holt's Service Station was one of the first businesses in South Jordan, operating from about 1930 to 1980. Run by the local Holt family, the service station sold gasoline and basic groceries and rented freezer lockers for meat. Cold soda and ice cream were customer favorites.
  7. Founded by Fred Lampropoulos in 1987, Merit Medical Systems Inc., with its world corporate headquarters in South Jordan, is a leading manufacturer and marketer of proprietary disposable medical devices.
  8. The Jordan River Utah Temple is the 20th operating temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church completed building construction in 1981 and renovated it in 2018.
  9. Upon the completion of the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple in 2009, South Jordan became the first city in the world to have two LDS temples.
  10. Built in 2003, The Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple is a place to worship, conduct religious activities, and pursue Hindu ideals, traditions, and culture.
  11. After incorporating in 1935, South Jordan held city meetings in private homes. It was not until 1972 that the City opened its first city hall. After relocating to Redwood Road in 1988, South Jordan dedicated its current city hall at 1600 W Towne Center Dr. on July 3, 2003.
  12. Jimmy Blair designed and built Mulligans Golf and Games, which opened in 1992. It was purchased by South Jordan City in 2004 to preserve open space as development increased. Mulligans remains a community golf and recreation staple, located near the “entry to the City” from the I-15 corridor.
  13. As part of the Salt Lake County Equestrian Park and County Fairgrounds, the Laurel Brown Race Track operated for nearly 50 years, providing Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, Cutter, and Chariot racing for the community.
  14. On December 1, 1938, during a fierce blizzard, a Jordan High School bus carrying 39 students was hit by a train. The collision claimed the lives of 23 children and the bus driver. The 15 survivors faced a lifetime of serious physical injuries and emotional scars. In the wake of the horrific crash came railroad crossing laws, mechanical crossing arms, and national regulations that are still in place today.
  15. Edward J. Fraughton is an American artist, sculptor, and Inventor. He is primarily known for his monumental work and individual collector editions depicting the history of the American West. He has been a resident of South Jordan since 1974, serving on the South Jordan Planning Commission from 1977 to 1985.
  16. South Jordan City's festival and annual parade are highly anticipated and beloved by residents and visitors alike. In 2016, the City changed the celebration's name from Country Fest to SoJo Summerfest, broadening the event focus to represent the growing and changing community. Taking place every year on the first weekend of June, SoJo Summerfest is truly "where summer begins!"
  17. The first Latter-day Saint settlers in South Jordan built dugouts into the hillside to serve as homes during their first year. Lumber was in short supply, so adobe bricks and thatch from rushes in the nearby wetlands were used to construct the roof and front of the dugouts. A reproduction of a dugout stands near the Gale Center of History & Culture.
  18. The Jordan River creates an ideal habitat for wildlife, including deer, beaver, fox, amphibians, reptiles, and fish. It flows more than 50 miles north from Utah Lake to the Great Salt Lake. The river earned recognition in 1991 as part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network, critical for birds that migrate annually from South and North America.
  19. Oquirrh Lake is a man-made lake within the Daybreak Development named after the nearby Oquirrh Mountains. The lake is approximately 93 acres and has around 4.3 miles of shoreline. The lake offers many recreational amenities like paddle boarding and kayaking on the lake, biking and walking on trails, and playing and gathering at parks.
  20. For nearly half a century, starting with a single buffalo purchased from the Hogle Zoo, the Jones family raised and ranged American Bison in South Jordan.
  21. In about 1910, South Jordan farmers began cultivating sugar beets, which quickly became the area's main crop. Utilizing a "beet dump" on Redwood Road, farmers transferred their cabbage-sized sugar beets to railcars or trucks bound for the neighboring town's processing factory.
  22. "The Founding Families" statue at Heritage Park represents the permanent legacy of the courage, faith, and endurance of South Jordan's founding families.
  23. Established in 1908, Bingham High School is one of the oldest schools in Utah. Originally built in Copperton, the high school moved to a new building in South Jordan in 1975 that is still used today. The school's name and mascot— the Miners — comes from its proximity to the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine.
  24. The Samuel Elijah Holt Farm, with its buildings dating from 1907 to about 1930, is one of the last surviving examples of an active homestead by early settlers of South Jordan.
  25. The Heritage Park Splash Pad opened in June of 2023. The iconic water tower and many water features have made it a popular spot for residents to recreate and play in the hot summer months.
  26. The Daybreak development is a large master-planned community of approximately 4,127 acres. The development includes single-family housing, townhomes, condominiums, apartments, and a mix of retail businesses. A Triple-A Major League ballpark will anchor a planned urban center within the development as early as 2025. The development has approximately 1,032 acres of open space.
  27. A prominent feature to the west of South Jordan, the Kennecott Copper Mine has operated since the late 1800s. It is the largest man-made excavation and deepest open-pit mine in the world, having produced more copper than any other mine in history.
  28. Mayor Dawn R. Ramsey was elected as the first woman mayor of the City of South Jordan in 2017 and re-elected for a second term in 2021. She is a sixth-generation Utahan and is proud of her pioneer heritage. As Mayor, she is known for her commitment to maintaining the City's high quality of life for residents now and into the future. She continues to voice that the future is bright" in South Jordan.
  29. The City built the first two fishing ponds near the Jordan River in the late 90s and a third in the early 2000s. The ponds receive water from the historic Beckstead Canal and are home to many fish species. Many youths in the community have enjoyed the outdoors while catching their first fish at the ponds.
  30. The Salt Lake and Utah Railroad, also known as the Orem Line or Orem Interurban, was an electric railroad that operated between downtown Salt Lake City and Payson, Utah. The railroad opened in 1914 with stops in Utah and Salt Lake counties. It ended in downtown Salt Lake City at a location shared with the Bamberger Railroad, which was at the current site of Abravanel Hall. The railroad stopped service in 1946.
  31. An expansion of the TRAX Red Line on August 7, 2011, opened with service from the University of Utah to the Daybreak Community in South Jordan. The Frontrunner commuter train began service at the South Jordan Station on December 10, 2012.
